Skoda Kodiaq: Common Problems & Reliability Guide (South Africa)

Real, sourced data · last reviewed 2026-09-18
30+ years of practical automotive experience behind these reports - our sourcing methodology

These are issues documented for the Skoda Kodiaq in general - things to check for, not a diagnosis of any particular car. Whether a specific car has one depends on its age, mileage, service history and how it was used.

Six EU/RAPEX Recalls Including an Engine-Cover Fire Risk, Plus DSG/Chain Wear

Multiple: Airbags/Restraint System (three of the six recalls); Engine/Fire Risk (one recall); Brakes (one recall); Steering (one recall). Separately, non-recall common problems: Transmission (DSG mechatronic unit); Engine (1.4/1.5 TSI timing chain/tensioner) · severity: The engine-cover fire recall is genuinely safety-critical - RAPEX's own defect description states the loose cover 'will come into contact with the hot area of the exhaust gas turbocharger, increasing the risk of burns or fire.' The two airbag-related recalls (Takata inflator, propellant deterioration) are also genuinely safety-critical per their own RAPEX descriptions (inflator burst / fragment risk). The brake-pedal and steering-system recalls are real but each RAPEX description given was summary-level only, not independently expanded in this research pass. DSG mechatronic failure, where it occurs, is a real functional failure (loss of reverse gear / gearbox emergency mode reported in one documented case) rather than a documented crash-risk safety defect. Timing-chain wear left unaddressed risks progressing to genuine internal engine damage per the general TSI-family failure mechanism (see below), though no Kodiaq-specific catastrophic-failure case was independently verified in this research pass. · confidence: 46/100 · 5 cited sources
Applies to: 1.4 TSI (EA211 family, first-generation, 2016-2021) / 1.5 TSI Evo mild-hybrid (EA211evo family, 110kW/250Nm, second-generation from 2023) and 3 more - not every engine this model has been sold with

Symptoms to watch for

  • Engine-cover fire risk (recall): no reliable pre-failure driver-facing symptom - a loose cover may be visible/audible as a rattle under the bonnet before it fully detaches, but RAPEX's own remedy is a dealer inspection/correction of the fastening, not a driver-diagnosable fault
  • DSG mechatronic judder: a shudder or hesitation felt when pulling away from a standstill, particularly at low speed and in stop-start traffic, per multiple independent Kodiaq owner-forum threads
  • DSG mechatronic advanced failure: erratic or delayed gear engagement, the gearbox entering a restricted 'emergency mode', and in the one documented forum case, loss of reverse gear specifically
  • Timing-chain wear: a metallic rattle on cold start that reduces or disappears once the engine warms up and oil pressure builds, rough/uneven idle, and in advanced cases a perceptible loss of power
  • Electric parking brake malfunction (non-recall common problem per autodoc.co.uk, reported on 2017+ models from ~30,000-50,000km): the parking brake failing to release or engage properly
  • Insufficient air-conditioning cooling (non-recall common problem per autodoc.co.uk, reported on 2018+ models) - included here as a genuine, if lower-severity, recurring owner complaint rather than a fabricated generic note

What To Check

None of the six recalls is reliably detectable on a test drive - VIN-based verification against Skoda's own recall database is the only reliable check. DSG judder from a standstill IS reasonably test-drive-detectable given how consistently and early it is reported across independent sources. Timing-chain rattle is partially detectable via a careful cold-start check specifically (not a warmed-up test drive, since the noise is reported to fade once oil pressure builds) - arrive at any viewing before the engine has been started that day if possible.

This guide summarises documented, sourced findings for the Skoda Kodiaq generally. It is not an assessment of any specific vehicle - mileage, service history and condition vary by example.
