These are issues documented for the Opel Grandland in general - things to check for, not a diagnosis of any particular car. Whether a specific car has one depends on its age, mileage, service history and how it was used.

Timing Chain Tensioner Wear, Carbon Buildup & HPFP Failure Risk

Engine · severity: High - a real, well-documented pattern across sibling Peugeot models confirmed to share the identical EP6-family engine code, compounded on this TURBO variant by two additional failure modes (carbon buildup, HPFP failure) that the related naturally-aspirated VTi variant explicitly does not carry · confidence: 54/100 · 3 cited sources
Applies to: 1.6L EP6FDT turbo inline-4, 130kW/178hp (first-generation Grandland X, 2017-2024, PSA… / 1.6L EP6FADTXD turbo inline-4, up to 134kW/300Nm (South African spec, GS Line)… - not every engine this model has been sold with

Symptoms to watch for

  • Diesel-like rattle from the cam cover on a genuinely cold start, lasting 2-10 seconds and lengthening as wear progresses
  • Rough idle and misfires under light throttle
  • Extended cranking after the vehicle has sat overnight
  • Camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault codes if timing has drifted enough
  • Separately (HPFP-specific, not chain-related): hard starting, hesitation under load, or a stored fuel-rail-pressure-too-low code

Rough Repair Cost

Independent workshops typically charge R12 000-R90 000 for this, depending on exactly what's needed. The full independent-vs-dealer breakdown is in a full AutoLytiQs report.

What To Check

The chain/tensioner rattle requires a genuine cold start - a seller who starts the vehicle before a buyer arrives can hide this entirely, and even a real cold start may not be audible from inside the cabin until wear is already advanced. Listen from outside the vehicle or near the engine bay on first start of the day. The separate HPFP failure mode (hard starting, hesitation under load) may show intermittently and is not guaranteed to appear on a single test drive.
