Land Rover LR2: Common Problems & Reliability Guide (South Africa)

Real, sourced data · last reviewed 2026-09-02
30+ years of practical automotive experience behind these reports - our sourcing methodology

These are issues documented for the Land Rover LR2 in general - things to check for, not a diagnosis of any particular car. Whether a specific car has one depends on its age, mileage, service history and how it was used.

Timing-Belt Water Pump Risk, Rear Pinion Whine & 3 NHTSA Recalls

Engine - cooling system/timing drive interaction (TD4); Drivetrain - rear differential pinion bearing (pre-2011); Structural/Restraint - sunroof, airbag clockspring, airbag OCS ECU (recalled) · severity: High for the water pump/timing belt interaction specifically - because the water pump is physically driven by the timing belt, a water pump failure (bearing seizure or impeller failure) risks damaging or disrupting the belt itself, which on this interference-type diesel engine can risk the same catastrophic piston-to-valve contact this library documents for other timing-drive failures. Pinion bearing whine is a real but lower-severity nuisance/wear item rather than a safety-critical failure. The three recalled items range from moderate (sunroof guide rail) to genuinely safety-critical (both airbag-related recalls). · confidence: 43/100 · 4 cited sources
Applies to: 2.2L TD4 inline-4 turbodiesel (Ford Duratorq-derived) / 3.2L i6 petrol (Volvo-sourced) - not every engine this model has been sold with
ⓘ Not yet individually classified

Symptoms to watch for

  • Any coolant loss, overheating, or an audible whine/grinding specifically from the water pump area on a 2.2L TD4 diesel - treat as a real, standalone risk distinct from the belt's own separately-scheduled replacement interval
  • A whine, hum, or drone from the rear of the vehicle, particularly noticeable at constant higher speeds - the real, sourced pinion bearing symptom, most associated with pre-2011 models specifically
  • Power steering pump whine that grows worse when turning the wheel - an early warning sign of power steering pump failure per roverparts.eu
  • EGR valve-related rough running or emissions faults on the 2.2L TD4
  • No reliable driving symptom exists for the three recalled items (sunroof guide rail, airbag clockspring, airbag OCS ECU) - these require a direct VIN/recall-status check rather than being detectable through use

What To Check

Partially. Rear pinion bearing whine and power steering pump whine are both reasonably test-drive-detectable. Water pump condition is NOT reliably test-drive-detectable before failure - it can operate normally until a bearing or seal lets go, which is precisely why this card's own key finding treats it as a proactive-replacement item rather than a wait-for-symptoms one. The three recalled items have no driving symptom at all and require a direct VIN check.
