Honda Civic: Common Problems & Reliability Guide (South Africa)

Real, sourced data · last reviewed 2026-09-02
30+ years of practical automotive experience behind these reports - our sourcing methodology

These are issues documented for the Honda Civic in general - things to check for, not a diagnosis of any particular car. Whether a specific car has one depends on its age, mileage, service history and how it was used.

Fuel Pump Impeller Recall (US) Plus Takata Airbag Recall (SA-Confirmed)

Fuel System (fuel pump); Safety System (airbag) · severity: Both are genuinely safety-critical. Fuel pump: NHTSA's own consequence statement is an engine stall while driving, increasing crash risk, with documented cases of sudden, no-warning stall during normal operation. Airbag: a ruptured Takata inflator can send metal shrapnel into the cabin during deployment - one of the most significant safety recalls in automotive history. · confidence: 56/100 · 7 cited sources
Applies to: 1.8L R18Z1 naturally aspirated SOHC i-VTEC inline-4, 104kW/174Nm, CVT (Comfort/Elegance… / 1.5L L15B7 VTEC Turbo inline-4, 127kW/220Nm, CVT (Sport/Executive trims) and 1 more - not every engine this model has been sold with

Symptoms to watch for

  • Fuel pump (real, recall-documented): difficulty starting, engine hesitation while driving, illuminated Check Engine Light with P0087, intermittent stall-and-restart particularly at low speed shortly after starting - and, separately, a sudden, complete, no-warning stall if the impeller seizes outright rather than degrading gradually
  • Airbag (Takata): no reliably detectable symptom before deployment - this is precisely why a proactive VIN-based recall check exists rather than relying on any driver-noticeable sign
  • Generic, NOT SA-confirmed, global 10th-gen Civic owner-reported notes (included for completeness, not as confirmed SA-market findings): CVT jerky shifts, unusual noise, or delayed acceleration reported by multiple independent global sources in the 60,000-80,000km range, though Honda's CVT is generally described across these same sources as less problematic than many rival CVTs; touchscreen infotainment freezing/unresponsiveness and CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity bugs, particularly on early pre-facelift (pre-2019) units

What To Check

Neither real defect is reliably detectable through normal driving or a standard pre-purchase inspection. The fuel pump defect may show partial-failure symptoms (hesitation, hard starting) but NHTSA's own filing is explicit that seizure can occur suddenly with no prior warning. The airbag defect is completely undetectable short of deployment. VIN-based recall-status verification with Honda South Africa is the only reliable check for both. Generic CVT judder/infotainment glitches, where present, ARE test-drive-observable, but these are not confirmed SA-specific findings.
