GWM P500: Common Problems & Reliability Guide (South Africa)

Real, sourced data · last reviewed 2026-08-13
30+ years of practical automotive experience behind these reports - our sourcing methodology

These are issues documented for the GWM P500 in general - things to check for, not a diagnosis of any particular car. Whether a specific car has one depends on its age, mileage, service history and how it was used.

Generations and engines covered

This guide covers the GWM P500 specifically - the higher-trim nameplate on a 2.4L GW4D24 turbodiesel (or 2.0T petrol-hybrid) engine that GWM launched in South Africa in August 2024. It is a materially different vehicle from the smaller-engined original GWM P-Series (2.0L GW4D20M, launched 2020) and from the February 2025 "P300" facelift naming, which is built on the older P-Series platform.

Looking for the original P-Series instead? See our dedicated GWM P-Series guide below. We don't yet have enough sourced data for a separate P300 guide.

Electronic Power Steering (EPS) Wiring Harness Contact with Front Driveshaft

Steering / Body Electrical - Safety Recall · severity: Critical - a real, manufacturer-acknowledged risk of sudden power-steering loss and/or unexpected engine shutdown while driving, not a drivability inconvenience · confidence: 62/100 · 3 cited sources
Applies to: 2.4L GW4D24 turbodiesel, 135kW/480Nm, 9-speed automatic / 2.0T petrol-hybrid (HEV), per SA-market P500 HEV trim - not every engine this model has been sold with

What To Check

Not something a buyer can detect through inspection or a normal test drive - the wiring/driveshaft clearance issue is internal to the front subframe area. The correct buyer action is a VIN-based recall check with GWM SA, not a physical inspection. A sudden power-steering loss or unexplained engine cutout during a test drive would be a real, direct (though late-stage) symptom if the defect is present and unaddressed.

This guide summarises documented, sourced findings for the GWM P500 generally. It is not an assessment of any specific vehicle - mileage, service history and condition vary by example.
