BMW M8: Common Problems & Reliability Guide (South Africa)

Also covers: M8 Competition, M8 Gran Coupe

30+ years of practical automotive experience behind these reports - our sourcing methodology

These are issues documented for the BMW M8 in general - things to check for, not a diagnosis of any particular car. Whether a specific car has one depends on its age, mileage, service history and how it was used.

Integrated Brake System Control Unit Weld Defect (Real, Confirmed Recall) Plus Real Carbon Ceramic Brake Squeal and a Single Documented Rod Bearing Report

Braking system (21V-062, real recall); Braking system (carbon ceramic squeal, cosmetic/nuisance); Engine - internal bottom-end (single rod bearing report, not established as a pattern) · severity: 21V-062 is a genuine, real safety-critical defect (reduced braking assistance/extended stopping distance under hard braking) - free to remedy where completed. Carbon ceramic brake squeal is a real but low-severity nuisance/cosmetic issue with no safety implication described by any source found in this pass. The single rod-bearing report describes a real, potentially serious engine repair (bearing replacement plus VANOS rebuild) if it recurs, but this card explicitly does not generalise a single report into an established severity/frequency finding. · confidence: 47/100 · 8 cited sources

Symptoms to watch for

  • 21V-062 recall: a 'stiff' brake pedal and a warning lamp in the instrument cluster during hard braking, per BMW's own directly-read consumer FAQ - BMW's own guidance is that the vehicle remains safe to drive under normal conditions unless this specific symptom actually occurs, at which point the driver should stop and contact roadside assistance rather than continue driving.
  • Carbon ceramic brake squeal: a metallic squeaking/squealing noise, most commonly reported at low speed or when coming to a stop, per multiple real, independent BIMMERPOST (F92-specific) and Bimmerfest forum threads - reported by owners as young as roughly 3,000 miles into ownership, with dealers reportedly describing it as 'normal' and offering no permanent fix (temporary relief sometimes achieved via rotor/pad sanding, pad-edge chamfering, or a squeal-treatment product).
  • S63TU4 rod bearing (single forum report only): copper visible on rod bearings at 45,000 miles per one real, named BIMMERPOST F92 forum account, requiring bearing replacement and a VANOS rebuild - explicitly disclosed as one owner's experience, not a confirmed pattern.
  • Added 2026-09-15, 21V096000 recall: a rearview camera image that may be partially obscured, or a screen that may not illuminate, when shifting into Reverse - a real, FMVSS 111 rear-visibility non-compliance confirmed directly via NHTSA's own API for the M8.
  • Added 2026-09-15, 19V883000 recall: the transmission shifting to neutral and a loss of propulsion, from a transmission wiring harness that can become damaged and short-circuit - a real, genuinely serious drivetrain safety recall.
  • Added 2026-09-15, 20V164000 recall: front seat belt buckle sensors inaccurately detecting a belted occupant as unbelted - a real recall confirmed to include the M8 Gran Coupe.

What To Check

Unlike several of this platform's other Supercars-section findings, carbon ceramic brake squeal (if present) IS genuinely test-drive-detectable - braking to a stop at low speed during inspection is a real, free check. The 21V-062 recall's own described symptom (stiff pedal/warning lamp under hard braking) is inherently NOT something to deliberately try to trigger on a test drive, and completion status should instead be VIN-checked. The single rod-bearing report's symptom (copper visible on bearings) is an internal engine condition not detectable on a test drive at all - only an oil analysis or invasive inspection would reveal it.
