These are issues documented for the BMW M340i in general - things to check for, not a diagnosis of any particular car. Whether a specific car has one depends on its age, mileage, service history and how it was used.

6+ Separate Recalls Including a Starter Fire-Risk Recall, Plus B58 Wear Items

Electrical/Software (DME engine-management, ECU/door-lock, receiver audio module, rearview camera) - majority of recall items; Safety Restraint (seat frame weld, seat belt chime); Electrical/Fire Risk (starter motor); Engine wear items (valve cover/PCV, cooling system, VANOS, carbon buildup, turbocharger, high-pressure fuel pump) - none of these wear items have any recall or TSB coverage · severity: Recalls: 21V-598 (brake-assist reduction) and the SA/US starter-motor items are genuinely safety-critical (extended stopping distance; a real, disclosed vehicle-fire risk, including while parked, per the SA NCC's own wording); 23V-584 (seat belt chime) and 23V-211 (seat frame weld) are real FMVSS/occupant-safety compliance items; 23V-118 (door-lock ECU) and 21V-096 (rearview camera) are lower-severity convenience/visibility items. Wear items: valve cover/PCV leak and coolant-system failure are rated 'High' by mtautoparts.com given the risk of oil starvation or overheating if ignored; VANOS solenoid and carbon buildup are rated Low-Moderate; turbocharger/wastegate wear is rated Moderate, escalating to High if ignored; HPFP failure can cause stalling and limp mode. · confidence: 55/100 · 5 cited sources

Symptoms to watch for

  • Recall-relevant (no reliable pre-failure symptom for most - a VIN check is the only reliable method): reduced brake assist / longer stopping distance under specific rare engine-start conditions (21V-598); seat belt warning chime not sounding (23V-584); improperly welded seat frame - not detectable without inspection (23V-211); automatic door locking malfunctioning after an ECU replacement (23V-118); partially obstructed or blank rearview camera image after shifting into reverse (21V-096); and, for the real, SA-confirmed starter recall, no reliable pre-failure symptom exists before a possible fire risk - even while parked, per the NCC's own wording
  • B58 wear items - valve cover/PCV: burning oil smell, oil staining around the engine's top, oily spark-plug wells, low-oil warning light
  • B58 wear items - coolant system: white/green dried coolant residue at the water pump's weep hole, slow but persistent coolant-level loss, temperature warnings
  • B58 wear items - VANOS: power loss, sluggish throttle response, rough idle particularly on a cold start, increased fuel consumption, check-engine light
  • B58 wear items - carbon buildup: worsening rough idle over time, hesitation on acceleration, reduced power, potential cylinder misfire at the more advanced end
  • B58 wear items - turbocharger/wastegate: metallic rattling from the engine bay at low RPM or on deceleration, blue/grey exhaust smoke on startup or hard acceleration
  • B58 wear items - HPFP: long cranking particularly in cold weather, rough idle, misfires, and in severe cases stalling and the engine entering limp mode

What To Check

None of the six recall items is reliably test-drive-detectable - a seat-frame weld defect, starter corrosion risk, and most software issues require either a VIN check or a specific fault condition to manifest, not routine driving. The B58 wear items are partially detectable on a longer test drive (rough idle, cold-start knock/rattle, visible smoke, oil smell) but early-stage wear (a slowly weeping valve cover, gradually degrading VANOS response) may not be obvious on a short test - a specialist pre-purchase inspection covering these specific items is materially more reliable than driving impressions alone.
