These are issues documented for the BMW M3 in general - things to check for, not a diagnosis of any particular car. Whether a specific car has one depends on its age, mileage, service history and how it was used.

S65 Rod/Bearing Wear (Litigated, Never Recalled) Plus 3 NHTSA Recalls

Engine - internal bottom-end (rod/main bearings); Safety System (airbag); Electrical (battery cable, blower motor wiring) · severity: Rod/main bearing: high - per the Afzal complaint, bearing wear/failure can, in a worst case, cause the engine to fail 'while driving and at any speed' due to insufficient lubrication, and once metal debris circulates through the oil system, a bearings-only repair is no longer sufficient (see repair cost detail below). Takata airbag: genuinely safety-critical - a ruptured inflator can send metal shrapnel into the cabin during deployment, one of the most significant safety recalls in automotive history. Battery cable: NHTSA's own concern is intermittent loss of electrical power, which can affect multiple vehicle systems unpredictably. Blower motor wiring: lower severity, an HVAC/electrical wiring concern rather than a drivetrain or occupant-safety risk in the sources checked. · confidence: 58/100 · 5 cited sources
Applies to: S65B40 4.0L naturally aspirated V8, 309kW/420Nm, 8,300rpm redline, individual throttle… - not every engine this model has been sold with

Symptoms to watch for

  • Rod/main bearing: an audible knocking noise from the engine, particularly at idle or under load - cited directly in both real lawsuits as the presenting symptom (Afzal's own vehicle, and multiple owner reports referenced across BMW-specialist sources) - is the most commonly described early warning sign; in a more advanced or sudden failure, per the Afzal complaint, the engine can fail entirely 'while driving and at any speed'
  • Takata airbag: no reliably detectable pre-deployment symptom exists - this is precisely why a VIN-based recall check matters rather than relying on any driver-noticeable sign
  • Battery cable: intermittent loss of electrical power to vehicle systems, potentially without a single consistent trigger condition
  • Blower motor wiring: HVAC blower malfunction or irregular operation consistent with a wiring-circuit fault, per BMW's own recall description

What To Check

Rod bearing wear may produce an audible knock on a cold start or under load once reasonably advanced, but per the real litigation record itself, failure can occur suddenly and 'at any speed' - meaning a clean, quiet test drive does not reliably rule out the issue, particularly at an early stage. The Takata airbag defect is completely undetectable short of deployment. The battery cable and blower motor wiring defects may produce intermittent, hard-to-reproduce symptoms during a short test drive. A specialist pre-purchase inspection (oil filter cut open for metal debris, borescope/compression check where warranted) is materially more reliable than driving impressions alone for this specific vehicle.

This guide summarises documented, sourced findings for the BMW M3 generally. It is not an assessment of any specific vehicle - mileage, service history and condition vary by example. A full AutoLytiQs™ report checks a specific listing for sale against this data plus a live South African market valuation, to tell you whether that exact vehicle is a good buy.
