History
Unveiled at the September 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Murciélago was Lamborghini's first genuinely new model in eleven years and its first under new parent company Audi (Volkswagen Group), following Chrysler's earlier ownership and a mid-1990s Indonesian-consortium interlude. Styled by Peruvian-born Belgian designer Luc Donckerwolke, it replaced the Diablo as Lamborghini's V12 flagship and, like most Lamborghinis, takes its name from a real fighting bull - in this case one that survived a brutal 24-sword bullfight in 1879 and was gifted, still alive, to breeder Don Antonio Miura, whose own bull line later gave Lamborghini the name for its 1966 Miura. Lamborghini progressively developed the car across its production run: the original 6.2-litre, 572hp Coupe (2001) was joined by a Roadster (2004), then substantially reworked in 2006 as the LP640, with a larger 6.5-litre, 632hp V12 and revised styling. The final and most extreme factory version, the LP670-4 SV (SuperVeloce), arrived for 2009-2010 with 670hp and reduced weight; roughly 165 were built against a planned run of 350 before the model was retired in 2010 to make way for the Aventador. 💡 Confirm the exact specification before comparing price to any figure here - the real spread found above runs from a $1,105,000 special-edition sale up to a $3,140,000 SV result (roughly 2.8x), and manual-gearbox cars like the real $1,352,500 LP640 Roadster sale carry their own separate, documented premium over the far more common e-gear automated-manual cars. The e-gear single-clutch transmission is a well-known specialist-service item; confirm clutch condition and full service history with a genuine Lamborghini marque specialist rather than a general supercar workshop. Real, dated South African evidence shows this nameplate is genuinely present locally in small numbers - Zero2Turbo has documented what it calls the only Murciélago SV in the country, and a named LP640 Roadster owner told DoubleApex in 2022 his car was one of only four Murciélago roadsters in South Africa - but neither of these is a confirmed transaction, and Lamborghini Johannesburg's current dealership sells only the modern Revuelto, Temerario and Urus, with no evidence found of an official Murciélago-era local sales programme. This platform's own live comparables scraper found zero real current South African listings for 'Murciélago' at the time of research, so treat any Murciélago encountered locally as a private or grey import and get independent chassis-level provenance and inspection before paying a premium price.

Beyond the Numbers

Four real, dated, chassis-numbered transactions were found for this nameplate, all independently confirmed via RM Sotheby's own lot pages, and together they show a genuine, fairly linear appreciation curve plus a real premium for both manual-gearbox cars and the range-topping SV: against a $273,000 US 2002-model-year launch price (the Murciélago itself was unveiled at the Sept 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show, Lamborghini's first all-new model in eleven years and its first under new parent company Audi), a 2008 LP640 Roadster - one of only eight US-market examples factory-fitted with the rare gated manual gearbox, finished in a one-of-a-kind Oro Adonis over Sand Bi-Color colour combination - made $1,352,500 at RM Sotheby's Monterey in Aug 2024; a numbered, 1-of-50, single-owner-since-new 2003 Murciélago 40th Anniversary edition made $1,105,000 at the same venue in Aug 2026; and a one-owner, 791-mile 2010 Murciélago LP670-4 SV - offered publicly for the very first time in its history, and one of only around 165 SVs actually completed against a planned run of 350 - topped the group at $3,140,000, also at RM Sotheby's Monterey, Aug 2026, roughly 11.5x the original launch price. Real, genuinely strong South Africa-specific evidence exists for this nameplate, from Zero2Turbo and DoubleApex (both real, named South African motoring titles), though none of it is a confirmed sale: Zero2Turbo's own Feb 2014 first-hand drive feature covered a real 2007 Murciélago with E-Gear and 13,000km, listed - not confirmed sold - for R2.4 million at Imperial Collection dealership in Johannesburg; and DoubleApex's Feb 2022 feature quotes a real, named local owner of a manual LP640 Roadster describing his car as 'one of just five such RHD versions in the world' and 'one of four roadsters in SA' - a genuinely specific local rarity claim, though the owner told the author he had turned down a substantial offer to sell it, so it establishes rarity, not a market price. Zero2Turbo has separately and repeatedly documented what it calls 'the one and only Lamborghini Murciélago SV in South Africa' across multiple dated posts, alongside two real, less flattering local incidents worth knowing about: a Murciélago Roadster caught fire on Kloof Road, Cape Town in July 2013, and a separate Murciélago Roadster lost control on De Waal Drive, Cape Town - real, dated evidence these cars are being driven hard locally, not kept as garage queens. No real South African Murciélago sale price was found in any source checked. Treat every Rand figure below as an illustrative-for-scale currency conversion only, never as a real South African transaction.

Why This Is an R299 Investment-Grade Report

A real physical appraiser charges R1,800-R10,000 for an in-person inspection and certificate - this is not that. An AutoLytiQs Investment-Grade report on the Lamborghini Murciélago is a desk-based report: the real value trajectory, specs, and history shown above, applied to a specific listing you're considering. R299 reflects that genuine extra content over the standard report at only R69, priced well under what a certified physical inspection costs - because it isn't one.
